Navigate GIS and geospatial sciences with the University of Aberdeen

Whether they’re printed or digital, billions of people use maps every month. So much so, that maps are among the most widely used tools in the world.

Take a deep dive into the framework that powers these essential tools with this flexible online microcredential from the University of Aberdeen. Explore Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies, from digital mapping to cartography.

Work with remote sensing and geospatial data

As a cornerstone of geospatial science, remote sensing helps you acquire and analyse spatial data from afar, enabling precise monitoring of environmental changes, detailed mapping of geographic features, and informed decision-making for various applications.

On this microcredential, you’ll learn how to utilise its techniques, as well as gain hands-on experience in collecting, storing, and editing geospatial data to support accurate and insightful analysis.

Delve into GIS and geospatial analysis tools

You’ll take your first steps into GIS and its tools, such as ArcGIS and QGIS, and how to best leverage these platforms for spatial analysis.

In addition, you’ll look into the ways these tools also help visualise data, perform complex analyses, and support decision-making processes.

Explore digital mapping and map design

Once data has been collected and assessed, you’ll be able to visualise the data by creating and designing effective maps using digital mapping techniques.

You’ll incorporate principles of visual communication and geo-visualisation to enhance map readability and impact.

Grow your professional development with the University of Aberdeen

Few universities offer master’s-level courses in GIS tools, cartography, and geovisualisation. The University of Aberdeen School of Geosciences’  accessible GIS course will give you unparalleled access to experienced geoscientists, internationally recognised academics, and cutting-edge resources throughout each industry-aligned module.

How will the skills you learn help in your career?

By the end of this course, you’ll have accumulated a range of knowledge that can be immediately applied to real-world scenarios. You’ll have mastered the process of collecting, managing, and editing spatial data, and grasp the art of designing maps and geovisualisation.

You’ll walk away with remote sensing and other GIS tools, including navigation, measurement, spatial queries, geocoding, scripting, buffering, and more.

With this comprehensive introductory foundation, you’ll be able to take more advanced-level GIS courses and progress your career.

How will you be assessed?

On this microcredential, you’ll be assessed in two ways.

The first is through a remote sensing assessment, which will test your retention of theoretical knowledge covered in the course and how it can be applied to a real-world scenario. The second assessment will consist of a written report based on data analysis and interpretation.

Each assignment is worth 50% of your final grade.

What will you receive?

Upon completing this microcredential, you’ll receive 15 master’s-level credits which can be applied towards another University of Aberdeen programme, such as their MSc Geographical Information Systems and MSc Energy Transition Systems and Technologies.

How long is this microcredential?

This part-time microcredential is 14 weeks long (including a 3 week spring holiday), totalling approximately 150 hours of study and assessment time.

This course is fully flexible, meaning you can set your study hours each week and work through modules at your own pace, outside of the few activities with fixed times. However, it’s recommended you devote 10-15 hours per week to stay on track.

Are you eligible for this microcredential?

There are no formal entry requirements to join this master’s-level microcredential, simply an interest in the subject matter and a good grasp of the English language.

While you don’t need to provide proof of your English language level before the start, an IELTS score of 6.5 overall is recommended to complete the course.

Is this microcredential right for you?

This online microcredential is an ideal first step for anyone interested in building their skills in GIS, cartography, and geospatial analysis while earning credits towards an MSc.

If you’re thinking about growing your career as a GIS specialist or exploring opportunities in geospatial roles within government, environmental agencies, or the commercial sector, this course is for you.
