Student opportunities

Universities have lots of options for you to engage in activities outside of your course. These are opportunities not only to meet and connect with others, but can aid your skill development and provide you with experiences which will be valuable for a legal career or otherwise.

This could be in the form of being a student ambassador, a peer mentor, part of a student society, or taking part in pro-bono schemes. Some of the things you can get involved in can be linked to your course such as joining the Law, debating or mooting student society or could be something unrelated such as a board game or table tennis society.

The key is being proactive, and finding out what interests you. In the first week of the university term, student groups and societies often host fairs encouraging other students to join. You can however join societies at any time, and can try out different options at various times throughout your course. Volunteering or paid roles will typically have application windows, so ensure you look these up as soon as you can upon enrolment.

University careers and employability support

Universities have dedicated teams whose role it is to support students whilst at university to discover the career options available upon graduation.

You can access support with skill development, career planning, applications, CVs, cover letters and interviews. The teams can also help you find internships, part-time jobs, volunteering opportunities and graduate roles.

You can book one to one appointments with career advisers and can attend workshops. Universities often host a suite of networking and employer focused events for you to attend too.
