The Wider Role of the Teacher - Secondary
Analyse your teaching practice and identify areas of professional development
This course encourages critical and systematic analysis of your teaching practice. This will give you the opportunity to identify your specific professional development needs. You will have the chance to reflect on, and evaluate, the strategies you have adopted to support pupil learning and progress.
You will also have the opportunity to explore the importance of pastoral care as well as emotional intelligence and how these impact the wider role of the teacher within a school.
What topics will you cover?
- Pastoral care: understanding and knowing the boundaries for the multi-faceted role of a teacher
- Understanding emotional intelligence and the role it plays in school
- What it means to be a professional teacher and how that looks in practice
- Considering and working to school homework policies
- How to encourage effective and efficient revision skills in your pupils
- Reflecting on and evaluating strategies that you have adopted to support pupil learning and progress

- Identify how to consolidate learning using homework and other out of class activities
- Demonstrate how you adapt teaching as a result of your knowledge of pupils with learning difficulties, behaviour concerns, additional needs and high-attaining pupils
- Explain pastoral care and the wider role of the teacher
- Identify how emotional intelligence and professional values may be reflected in your teaching
