The pivotal role of sustainable finance and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) in supporting the transition to a fairer and more environmentally conscious society is now well-recognised. On this two-week course from the Association of Corporate Treasurers, you’ll learn about the crucial role of private financing in promoting sustainability and ESG.
From recent updates from the International Capital Markets Association to market standards for sustainable borrowing, you’ll get an overview of the latest developments in sustainable finance.
Get to grips with sustainable financing frameworks
After an introduction to the role of private sector finance in supporting sustainable activities, you’ll dig deeper into the guidelines, principles, and frameworks of sustainable financing. You’ll examine the Green Bond Principles, Green Loan Principles, and the practicalities of designing sustainability frameworks.
By the end of this two-week course, you’ll have an expert understanding of how we can make private sector finance work for sustainability.

Week 1
Role of private finance in supporting sustainable activities
Introduction to the course
In this course you will get an understanding of the role of private sector finance within sustainability. We all need to consider and accept that sustainability is a key issue for our planet, our society and our businesses.
Background to the market in financing sustainable activity
In this Activity we explore how the market has evolved from the early supra-national issuers to the corporate sector and why private finance is needed to address climate related issues in particular.
The development of private sector alliances and groupings
As the market has begun to mature, a number of global alliances and groups have been established to focus and coordinate efforts. In this Activity, we explore some of the larger groups.
The role of the International Capital Market Association and Loan Market Association
The ICMA and the LMA play a pivotal role in supporting the financing of sustainable activities. But who are they and what do they do? In this Activity we provide an introduction to the work they perform.

In this activity, you will rate your understanding, we will take a look back at what we have gone through in Week 1 and finally you will have the opportunity to review your own understanding.
Week 2
Sustainable borrowing guidelines, principles and frameworks
Introduction to Week 2
Following a recap of Week 1 we will summarise the content in Week 2 that includes the principles and guidelines issued by the ICMA and the LMA.
What are the main principles and guidelines issued by the ICMA?
The ICMA sets globally adopted standards for a wide range of bond issues. In this Activity we explore the role of the ICMA and the specific standards it has established for the sustainable bond markets.
What are the main principles issued by the LMA?
The Loan Market Association has established a set of standards to support the sustainable borrowings market. In this Activity we review the three main types of loans and their principles - Green, Social and Sustainability-Linked.
Sustainable financing frameworks
In this Activity we explore green and social bond frameworks. We then share industry good practice on creating frameworks with examples from the real world.
