South Korea’s development experience has become a valuable research subject for many developing countries. However, behind this success lies numerous social issues. Currently, South Korea records the highest suicide rate, elderly poverty rate, and the proportion of unhappy children and Youth, among OECD member countries, indicating a serious situation of social conflict as well. So, how is it possible that South Korea has achieved such rapid economic growth while carrying so many problems? What efforts are being made by South Korea and its people to address these issues?

Hi, my name is Aaron Kim, the instructor for this course, Social Innovation in South Korea part 2. Social problems mentioned above cannot be solved with simple solutions. Social problems are usually complex and sometimes even “wicked.” One caveat is that you and I are part of the system that created the social problems and we are also affected by them. Therefore, the better we understand the problems, the more chances we have to solve the problem. To better understand and to be better prepared, I would like to embark on the second journey of Social Innovation in South Korea with all of you.
